Ray Bradbury 52-Week Writing Challenge – Week 11

Challenge Overview

The eleventh of fifty-two short stories completed!

This was a fun piece of flash fiction to write. It was born from thinking about lessons I’ve learned as a professional software engineer and how I could incorporate them as emotional stories in fiction. This is one such lesson in one such story. I look forward to returning to this 1,326-word flash fiction and revising it.

Ray Bradbury 52-Week Writing Challenge – Week 9

Challenge Overview

The ninth of fifty-two short stories completed!

I took a bit of a break this week, writing a single piece of flash fiction for my story. Going back to work after a two-week vacation and having a few other commitments to handle, left me with less time and energy than usual to dedicate to writing. Also, the last three stories were 4,500+ words, so I was starting to feel the creeping claws of burnout. This week’s science fiction piece was a quick but enjoyable write, coming in at 841 words.

Ray Bradbury 52-Week Writing Challenge – Week 8

Challenge Overview

The eighth of fifty-two short stories completed!

This week I continue exploring the episodic sci-fi book I’d like to put together by writing what could possibly be the last “episode” in the book. In this episode, I explore the conclusion of one of the primary protagonist’s character arc for the “season”. It turned out better than expected and does actually feel like a decent conclusion for an arc. The short story came out to 5,524 words.

Ray Bradbury 52-Week Writing Challenge – Week 7

Challenge Overview

The seventh of fifty-two short stories completed!

This week I wrote what will possibly be the first “episode” in an episodic-ish science fiction series I’d like to write. I intend to use this challenge as a way to explore this series more, and I look forward to writing more in this sci-fi setting I’m slowly constructing. Episode one came out to 5,167 words.

Ray Bradbury 52-Week Writing Challenge – Week 4

Challenge Overview

The fourth of fifty-two short stories completed!

My fourth story for this challenge started as a dramatization of the backstory for a D&D character I wanted to create. But it morphed into something more during the creation of the story area document. Even though I think it is going to take some work to refocus the story in a few areas on things more president to the theme, I am rather happy with how this short story of 7,504 words turned out.

Ray Bradbury 52-Week Writing Challenge – Week 3

Challenge Overview

The third of fifty-two short stories completed!

My third story for this challenge got away from me word-count-wise as it ended up being a novelette finishing at 13,810 words. It is a dramatization of the backstory for a Non-Player Character (NPC) that showed up in the Dungeons & Dragons game I run for my friends. It was a challenge to put together the narrative, and I discovered a number of things about the protagonist in writing this first draft that’ll be fun to smooth out in future drafts.

Ray Bradbury 52-Week Writing Challenge – Week 2

Challenge Overview

The second of fifty-two short stories completed!

My second story for this challenge ended up being a short story of 2,115 words. It is a murder mystery piece inspired by binge-watching the Netflix series, Wednesday, and it takes place at a ten-year-old’s birthday party. I had a lot of fun writing the first draft, and I look forward to revising it in the future.
